Transportation
The South Arm area of Richmond is very easy to navigate; the through-roads are Williams running west to east and Number 4 Road running north to south. Steveston Highway and Blundell Road can both be reached via Number 4 Road, and both provide access to Highway 99, which residents can take into nearby cities. TransLink also operates all over Richmond, providing buses that take regular routes throughout the city. The nearest SkyTrain station is just minutes away, and provides rapid transit to downtown Vancouver. Although many South Arm residents enjoy walking and biking to nearby amenities, the majority of the residents rely on their personal vehicles to get around.
Schools
Children in South Arm attend Walter Lee Elementary, which feeds into either Matthew McNair Secondary or Hugh McRoberts Secondary. Families with very young children can take advantage of Early Foundations Montessori Preschool, which is located just north of Matthew McNair Secondary on Number 4 Road. For higher learning, Richmond offers up the satellite campus of Sprott Shaw College and Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Each of these schools offers several degree types in a huge variety of fields.
The Arts
One of the best places to find art within Richmond is the Richmond Art Gallery. Located at the Richmond Cultural Centre, the gallery is award-winning, and features extraordinary contemporary art and local as well as international artists. The art featured here includes topics like science, daily life, the environment, identity and social issues. While visiting the Richmond Cultural Centre, residents can obtain a map which showcases the locations of more than 65 pieces of free public art created by over 80 artists. The majority of these pieces were placed for the 2012 Vancouver Winter Olympics, but they are still present around the various communities for residents to enjoy.
Adjacent to the Richmond Cultural Centre is the Gateway Theatre, which is Richmond's only professional live theater. Here, residents can see everything from opera performances to comedy shows to plays. Those who are interested can also take classes at the Gateway Theatre, available for children and adults and covering things like voice lessons, musical theater lessons and acting lessons.
Recreation/Sports
Being a coastal city, Richmond offers up a huge variety of outdoor and water recreation activities, from fishing and canoeing to nature trails and parks. Closest to South Arm residents is the South Arm Community Centre, on Williams Road. Residents can take advantage of a fitness center, gym, a games and seniors activity room, various multipurpose and meeting rooms and basketball courts. Located next to the community center is the South Arm Park, a huge 56.75 acre park offering up numerous ball fields and courts, a massive playground, a heated outdoor pool and water slides and more. There are also a variety of nature trails and pathways where individuals can explore the beauty of the outdoors.
