Garden City is a moderately-sized community of 750 residents, located in central Richmond. Boarded between Blundell and Francis Roads, this neighbourhood is a spacious residential strip with No 3 Rd to the east and No 4 on the west side.

This lively community attracts families, as nearly 70% of households have children. The median age of this neighbourhood falls in the range of 41 which is average for the city of Richmond. With a median household income of $62,436 (2010) for this area, Garden City is one of the Richmond’s highest earning neighbourhoods.

The community experiences a temperate climate similar to the rest of Richmond, though slightly more protected from the elements than neighbourhoods along Richmond’s coastline. During the winter, the city experiences little to no snowfall and with an average of just 1,112.6mm, this community receives 30% less rain than neighbouring Vancouver.

Employment Opportunities

Garden City residents are active members of the workforce, with an employment rate for the community at 70%. As with the majority of Richmond, the sales and service, and business and finance industries employ much of the population. The proximity to Richmond Hospital located in the neighbouring district of Woodward, lends to high numbers of employment in the Health sector amongst members of this community.


A small plaza along Garden City Road ensures that neighbourhood residents need never travel far for the necessities. This small strip is home to convenience stores, a pharmacy, and small shops.  
No more than a 10 minute drive are three of Richmond’s major shopping malls. Parker Place and Lansdowne Centre are retail meccas for apparel, electronics, home goods and more, while the Asian shops in Aberdeen Centre sell unique  international wares.


In the Garden City Road plazas, several restaurants offer various options: quick service dining, coffee shops, pizza, BBQ, and Japanese.

If residents venture slightly further, Richmond’s acclaimed Food Street is just a short distance away. Restauranteurs share the food of their homelands, impressing patrons and satisfying any palette.


Bus stops located along Garden City Road run through the community connecting residential streets, while several sit along the outer main roads, connecting to the rest of Richmond.

Vancouver’s downtown is just a 17km drive from the centre of the community, while YVR International Airport sits 10 minutes away on Sea Island.


In Garden City, students have a choice of attending one of three elementary schools: St. Paul’s Catholic, Garden City Elementary, and Howard Debeck Elementary. Upon graduating, most students choose to continue their education in the community and attend R.C. Palmer Secondary School.  
Post-Secondary education options are accessible for Garden City residents. With the University of British Columbia 30 minutes away and Simon Fraser University within a 50 minute drive, students have two nationally-acclaimed universities nearby.

The Arts

Richmond’s cultural hub, Minoru Park, resides in a neighbouring community just 5 minutes from Garden City. Home to the Richmond Cultural Centre, the park contains the city’s library, museum, art gallery, and art centre. Here, visitors can view the exhibits showcasing contemporary art from Canadian and international artists, or catch a show of world-class opera.


Garden City Community Park is one of Richmond’s most visited recreational environments. Over 17 acres of park contain: a bike terrain park, large picnic area, skateboard park, tennis and basketball courts, an innovative playground and several playing fields. The park is host for local sporting events and gatherings.

The Outdoors

Bicycle-friendly roads lead to designated cycling trails in neighbouring communities.  A 1.5km pathway circuit resides in Garden City Community Park, wrapping around the lake for a peaceful walk by the water’s edge. An Arboretum is one of the park’s most special features, showcasing almost 100 trees of varying species from around the Pacific Rim.
