Employment Opportunities

Thanks to its easy access to Greater Vancouver’s Highway 1, Willoughby Heights is a popular home for commuting workers. Whether you’re travelling to Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey, or elsewhere in the Lower Mainland, you’re going to have one of the most direct routes of any neighbourhood in the area.

That said, many residents find gainful employment locally. Within Langley Township, job seekers have opportunities in several sectors: retail, manufacturing, construction, transportation, health care, and educational services. And as Willoughby Heights continues to be developed – with more commercial and business properties currently in process – demand for local workers will only grow.

Recreation/Sports

Nature lovers adore Langley Township’s many parks and trails. In nearby Derby Reach and Fort Langley, pedestrians and cyclists alike can enjoy leisurely paths along the Fraser River. They’re also great spots to enjoy local mountains like the Golden Ears and Mount Baker. Avid cyclists also love nearby Glen Valley for its varied terrain and quiet country backroads.

The Township of Langley built the Langley Events Centre within Willoughby Heights. This facility contains the Willoughby Community Centre, which provides a host of recreational activities for the whole family, including access to a fitness studio, weight room, walking track, and children’s play area. The Events Centre is also a busy social hub, home to the WHL’s Vancouver Giants and other local sports teams.

School-age kids also have access to developing sports leagues, including ice hockey, baseball, football, and more.

Shopping & Dining

In the centre of Willoughby Heights, Willoughby Town Centre comprises a host of stores that satisfy day-to-day. This includes Hakam’s Your Independent Grocer, Shopper’s Drug Mart, Town Centre Liquor Store, and various boutique and personal services shops. The neighbourhood is also just minutes away from Langley’s shopping district, which includes strip malls along Highway 10 and the Willowbrook Shopping Centre.

Willoughby Town Centre also offers a collection of fast food and independent restaurants, dishing up everything from pizza to burgers to sushi to authentic Korean cuisine. Sit-down dining options are readily available across the 208th overpass in Walnut Grove (including local landmark chains like The Keg and White Spot), along with a diverse array of multi-cultural flavours.

Transportation

Willoughby Heights drivers have access to three Highway 1 exits, including one HOV exit that brings busses and carpools alike to the Carvolth Exchange Park and Ride. Commuting residents have one of the most direct routes in the Lower Mainland, whether they’re travelling west to Burnaby and Vancouver or East to Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

The Carvolth Exchange Park and Ride is also a busy public transit hub, ferrying passengers both east and west. For local trips, TransLink buses service routes that lead to Fort Langley, Walnut Grove, and downtown Langley. If you’re trying to get somewhere in Greater Vancouver, Willoughby is a very convenient place to start your trip.

Schools

Langley School District #35 administers Willoughby Heights’s public schools. Younger students will attend either Willoughby Elementary or Lynn Fripps Elementary before graduating from Yorkson Creek Middle School. High school students attend the recently upgraded R.E. Mountain Secondary School campus. Residents can also check out the local private school The King’s School, which has a picturesque campus on the outskirts of Willoughby.

Post-secondary students are just minutes away from local institutions like Kwantlen Polytechnic University (located in downtown Langley) and Trinity Western University (located just east of Willoughby Town Centre). They’re also within driving range of the University of Fraser Valley (in Abbotsford) and Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus (found in Surrey’s Central City commercial district).

The Arts

Langley’s artistic community can be found displaying its creative efforts in various intimate and grassroots settings. In historic Fort Langley, The Fort Gallery hosts rotating displays that feature local artists. Likewise, BEZ Arts Hub is a happening venue where you can discover new music and even enroll in dance and art classes to develop your own creativity. Fine arts schools abound in Langley, from the devoted Langley Fine Arts School (in Fort Langley) to specialty music, dance, and live theatre studios that help young people nurture their skills and passions.

Local museums are another great place to awaken your imagination. Fort Langley is home to the Langley Centennial Museum, which combines historic commemoration with local art and photography demonstrations. Right next door to it is the BC Farm Museum, which celebrates a different type of creativity that gave birth to the local community. The Museum of Flight is another eye-opening experience, giving kids a taste of aviation history right next to Langley’s well-trafficked airport.

These residents love their suburb because they have convenient access to day-to-day amenities while enjoying their pleasant walkable streets.
