Port Moody is a Metro Vancouver city that hugs the east end of Burrard Inlet. Employment Opportunities

Port Moody also has the fourth highest municipal median family income in Metro Vancouver, at $74,527 (2006). Its largest employers are Eagle Ridge Hospital and School District 43. The health and social services sector, in particular, has experienced outstanding growth. Many opportunities are still found in traditional industrial jobs like the deep-sea bulk loading terminal, petrochemical distribution operations, large wood products manufacturers and the thermal electric generating station. But the new millennium has opened many new opportunities in retail and service, light industry, craft and cultural enterprises and home based businesses.

Shopping

Port Moody offers a great shopping experience, with many small retail outlets, as well as Newport Village, a 45-store complex with Pavilion Square at its heart. The village has become a popular venue for community events and gatherings. Port Moody is also close to Coquitlam Centre, Como Lake Village Shopping Centre and Lougheed Town Centre. During the winter months, the Port Moody Winter Farmers Market has become a weekly shopping hotspot.

Restaurants

Port Moody has more than sixty restaurants, ranging from ice cream shops to fine dining. You have ten pubs to choose from. If you have a taste for authentic ethnic fare you can enjoy Japanese, Thai, Indian, Spanish, Mexican, Mediterranean, Italian and more. For that special night out, you can select from The Boathouse on the waterfront, Ocean Wise or Saint St. Grill.

Transportation / Access

Port Moody is well connected with the rest of Metro Vancouver via the TransLink public transit system. It is also the first station in the WestCoast Express commuter rail line that connects the Tri-Cities area with Downtown Vancouver. According to Statistics Canada, Vancouver is defying the national trend, with significantly lower commute times from outlying areas. Construction is also underway on the Evergreen Line, TransLink’s LRT system that will link Port Moody to various other local stations, and to the main Millennium Line heading southwest.

Schools

School District 43 serves Port Moody with seven elementary schools, one middle school and two public high schools. Douglas college maintains a campus in Coquitlam’s Town Centre, and Simon Fraser University is located in nearby Burnaby.

The Arts

In 2004 Port Moody officially trademarked itself as the “City of the Arts.” The area has historically been a destination for artists, with its beautiful scenery, ambient lighting and low rent housing. The city has built upon that heritage, with art groups and annual festivals. Some of the popular festivals include the Festival of Arts, Golden Spike Days, the Wearable Art Awards, the PC Holiday Train and the Canadian Film Festival. Local events are often hosted at the Inlet Theatre, an intimate 200 seat venue.

Recreation / Sports

Over one-third of Port Moody’s land mass is dedicated to parkland, making it a very desirable place to live and play in BC’s Lower Mainland.

The Trans Canada Trail passes through Port Moody, stretching to run through every province and territory of Canada. When it is finished it will be the longest recreational trail in the world.

Port Moody is home to Rocky Point Park. The park has a newly renovated spray park, a skate park, hiking and bike trails, a large playground, a picnic shelter, recreation pier and boat launch. Bert Flinn Park is largely undeveloped parkland. This makes it very popular with mountain bikers and off-leash dog walkers. For those who love the beach, Old Orchard Park is another popular destination. It’s a great place for BBQs and weddings, or just a quiet day watching the kids play in the adventure playground.

In 2008 Port Moody renovated its Recreation Complex. This multi-purpose complex is home to an Olympic size ice rink, a state-of-the-art gym, an indoor running track and a curling rink. Port Moody also offers two outdoor swimming pools.

In February 2012, Peter Liang of Statistics Canada wrote, “The distinction for the highest growth rate in Metro Vancouver goes to Port Moody, where the population swelled by 19.9 per cent to 32,975. It had the third-biggest growth spurt, trailing only Langford and Lake Country.”

The population has since grown to over 34,000. Mayor Mike Clay believes the natural surroundings, extensive park system and affordability are what attracts people to Port Moody.
