As the 23rd largest municipality in all of British Columbia with close to 40,000 people, Mission is located ideally along the Fraser River in the province’s Lower Mainland. In Mission’s early days in the late 1890s when it was known as Mission City, it was the juncture between the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Burlington Northern Railroad, which gave it a unique geographical position. While the berry and logging industries both boomed in the 1960s, this has since waned and the prominent industries are now hydroelectricity and agriculture, with the largest employer being the local school district.
