Kitsilano, on the west side of Vancouver is known for its young, vibrant population, scintillating mountain views, easy access to shopping amenities and most importantly, for its enviable proximity to Kits Beach, which is one of the most popular beaches in BC. At the dawn of 20th century when the area was unexploited and vast with virgin lots, the city’s first settlers set foot here to play in the surf and unwind in the sun. They then pitched their tents on an area then known as Greer’s Beach, which lies next to the First Nations Reserve, Khatsalano; now with that pronunciation alone, it is easy to see why people prefer to shorten the name to Kits.
It wasn’t long after the first settlers pitched tent here when the area began to experience a boom. Several craftsman style houses began emerging and the population increased. This was between 1910 and 1912. By mid 60’s Kits had become a delight for several home seekers because of cheap housing. Kits main drag, West 4th Avenue, got a nickname Rainbow Road. With several music shops, vegetarian foods stores and eateries, its surely deserved that nickname.
Today, the tie-die element is gone but West 4th Avenue has not lost its charm and character. It is still the home of several cafes, organic food stores and notably, the home of Zulu Records- one of Canada’s most popular music sellers. Unfortunately, Kits is no longer the cheap neighborhood home seekers used to run to. Average home prices range from $466,000 to approximately $1,540,000.
