Located on Highway 17 just 27 kilometers west of White Rock and 27 kilometers south of Vancouver, Ladner is a predominantly fishing village. It is also part of the Delta municipality. Strait of Georgia connects the neighborhood with Fraser River while George Massey Tunnel connects with it with Richmond.
Like most of its competitors, Ladner too has some history behind it. Its name is in fact derived from the first two European settlers who found their way here; Thomas and William Ladner. Up to late 1880s, the area was known as Ladner’s Landing. Back then, it was a major fishing village that served surrounding farmers. In 1879, together with Tsawwassen, Ladner officially became part of the newly created municipality by the name Delta.
Today, Ladner is still a major historic town. Ladner Village, the neighborhood’s heritage community, boasts of an array of charming local shops, eateries and boulevard sidewalks. Much of Ladner’s history and how it has evolved over the years to what it is today can be found at the Delta Museums and Archives, which are within the neighborhood.
There are more than 20 elementary schools and 7 high schools within the Delta School district. In other words, worry not if you have school going children and young adults attending high school. Shopping is also easy here, thanks to two shopping malls on Ladner Trunk Road. Most residents however prefer heading to Richmond to shop at Ikea, Future Shop, Richmond Center or Lansdowne Shopping Centre. Ladner Village Market, a popular village market, is usually open every summer.
