The neighbourhood of Steveston North is located at the southwestern portion of Richmond's Lulu Island, north of Montcon Street and the historical Steveston Village. Offering a blend of single-family houses and multi-family housing options, Steveston offers both the charm and relaxed pace of a coastal neighbourhood combined with the huge variety of amenities offered by the city of Richmond. It is a family-oriented neighbourhood, with excellent educational options for children as well as a variety of recreational and cultural events and attractions. Several heritage locations are dotted throughout the neighbourhood, a throwback to simpler days that residents enjoy seeing. The city of Richmond is currently implementing a long-term plan for Steveston North to create a "complete" community, offering the best in terms of residential, commercial, recreational, historical and educational amenities to citizens without disrupting the charm and history of the neighbourhood. As of 2011, there were approximately 25,345 residents living in the Steveston community (as a whole), and the average household income was $111,702.
While Richmond offers up a thriving workforce, a large number of Richmond residents work in nearby cities like Vancouver. The majority of the shopping available within Steveston is located near Steveston Village, where eclectic shops and boutiques line the streets offering up jewelry, artisan-made soaps and lotions, arts and crafts and more. During the Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market, wares of all kinds are available, including homemade jams and sauces, amazing art and more. The market is in operation during the first and third Sundays of each month.
A huge variety of shopping outlets and malls are within minutes of Steveston North, including Richlea Centre, Richmond Centre, and Lansdowne Centre, where hundreds of the trendiest retailers are available. Here, residents can also find cafes and fast food restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, Steveston North is just minutes away from some of the best eating in Richmond. Steveston Village offers up infamous English-style fish and chips, fresh seafood of all kinds, tea and scones, Spanish cuisine, comfort food, surf and turf and some of the most delicious locally roasted coffee available. There is the added benefit of waterfront dining as well!
Getting around Steveston North isn't difficult; the major through-roads are Steveston Highway running west to east and Number 1 Road and Railway Avenue running north to south. According to a National Household Survey, approximately 13% of Steveston residents use public transit to get to work; TransLink buses operate throughout Richmond, with regular routes and frequent pick-ups at bus stops. About 3% of residents walked or bicycled to work, while more than 76% utilized personal vehicles. The SkyTrain stations in Richmond provide rapid transit to nearby cities, including downtown Vancouver, making a commute utilizing public transportation easy and convenient.
Children in the Steveston North neighbourhood attend John G. Deifenbaker Elementary, Manoah Steves Elementary or Westwind Elementary, depending upon their exact location. These schools feed into Robert Alexander McMath Secondary School and all are conveniently located within the neighbourhood, many within walking distance of the family homes. Those who want an alternative to public schools can take advantage of the Montessori schools available in Richmond, and there are also several French immersion schools available as well. Richmond is also the location of the satellite location of Sprott Shaw College and Kwantlen Polytechnic University; both offer several levels of degrees in a variety of fields.
Residents of Steveston North are quite proud that their neighbourhood is quite infamous in many television shows and movies, even if it's called by a different name. It is the shooting location of the American TV series Once Upon a Time; specifically Moncton Street. It has also appeared in the 2014 remake of Godzilla, episodes of Stargate SG-1, The 4400, and The X-Files. Residents can take advantage of various art galleries in the area, including Wool and Wicker with local Steveston artist Ken Kutney, Artisian's Galleria on Moncton Street, Phoenix Art Workshop and the Riverside Art Gallery.
Outside of the neighbourhood, just minutes away, is the Richmond Art Gallery. This gallery is located at the Richmond Cultural Centre, which also features a diverse display of historical memorabilia and artifacts. The Richmond Art Gallery features contemporary pieces from local, national and international artists. Live performances, from comedies to operas, can be caught at the Gateway Theater just next to the Richmond Cultural Centre, and classes can be taken there also.
Richmond is an outstanding location for outdoor sports and recreation. Large parks are present all over the city, including one in Steveston North featuring a picnic area, playground and plenty of natural areas to explore. The area offers up exciting options for whale watching and eco-tours, as well as miles and miles of trails and dykes to explore and enjoy. The historical areas of Steveston Village in the south are without a doubt worth checking out, from the Gulf of Georgia Cannery to the Britannia Heritage Shipyards National Historic Sites. Several festivals and events take place each year as well, including the Maritime Festival and the Steveston Salmon Festival.
