The community of Sechelt is located on the lower Sunshine Coast along the Strait of Georgia in British Columbia and stretches for 39 kilometres. The area was first settled by the First Nations people and named Sechelt, meaning “land between two waters”. In the 1920s, Europeans settled in the area and it was incorporated on February 15, 1956. The Union Steamship Company began to run vessels from the mainland and Sechelt soon became developed as a resort destination. While the area is still oriented towards tourism and recreation, logging and fishing are also primary industries for the community.
Community Resources and Recreation
With the Strait of Georgia and the Sechelt Inlet close by, there are a plenty of recreational opportunities including kayaking, boating, canoeing and fishing. Porpoise Bay Provincial Park and Sargeant Bay Provincial Park are also in close proximity and have plenty of trails for cycling, hiking and trail walking. When it comes to culture, the Sechelt Public Library offers books, DVDs and research materials for loan.
The area of Sechelt is not accessible by road, but can be reached by ferry or plane. Highway 101 passes right through the community and goes all the way throughout Sunshine Coast from Hopkins Landing all the way to Earls Cove.
Education: Elementary and Secondary Schools
School District 46 serves the community. Davis Bay, Kinnikinnick and Sechelt are the elementary schools available within the area. There are also two French language schools available, École du Pacifique primary school and École Secondaire Chatelech.
