The majority of Riverdale residents utilize their personal vehicles to get around, and the neighbourhood isn't difficult to navigate. The western boundary of Riverdale is bordered by No. 1 Road, and the northern boundary is bordered by Westminster Highway; both are through roads and Westminster Highway provides access to Highways 99 and 91 for routes out of Richmond and into neighboring cities. No. 2 Road, just outside the neighbourhood, takes Riverdale residents to Sea Island, home of the Vancouver International Airport; this is just 12 minutes away by car. Throughout Richmond, TransLink provides bus access with regular routes all over the city. The closest bus stop on Granville Avenue is less than a kilometer from the neighbourhood.
Families in Riverdale send their children to James Thompson Elementary and Burnett Secondary School, both of which are considered above average and are less than a kilometer from most homes in the neighborhood. Those seeking alternatives to public school can opt to send their children to St. Joseph the Worker Elementary and Richmond Christian School. Also within Richmond are Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Sprott Shaw College. At both of these schools, students can choose from a variety of degrees and programs for high-quality education.
Art is an important part of any community, and the Richmond Art Gallery is a wonderful place for individuals and families to start. It's located on the second floor of the Richmond Cultural Centre. Artists from around Richmond as well as those who are nationally-known are featured here, their fine contemporary art showcased as part of a rotating exhibit. The building is 21,000 square feet and contains a banquet hall, gym, fitness room, a banquet hall, 2 fully-functional kitchens and several multi-purpose rooms. Outdoors, children and families can enjoy ball fields of all types, including lighted tennis courts, boulders for climbing, a roller hockey and lacrosse box and a large network of walking trails. Each September, the Nibbles and Bits of Richmond Festival is held here, and residents turn out to sample the foods of local restaurants, check out amazing crafts and art projects, a carnival and the sports competition.
Terra Nova Rural Park and the Terra Nova Natural Area are fantastic options for those in search of fun and thrills. At the park, individuals can explore a variety of trails, gardens and wildlife habitats while the Natural Area is an amazing spot for bird-watching. Over 1.4 million birds migrate through the area each year, so visitors often get the chance to spot majestic eagles, herons, gulls and more. Other options for recreation in the area include the Richmond Oval, which was built for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the Quilchena Golf & Country Club featuring a gorgeous 6,781-yard course, and the John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse.
