Those living in Ironwood also have access to a variety of delicious restaurants and fast food chains. Brown's Socialhouse is an upscale eatery offering excellent dishes and drinks. Other options include The Keg Steakhouse and Bar, Original Joe's, and Nando's Chicken. Alexandra Road nearby is an excellent place to shop, but is well known for its nickname, "Food Street," due to the large number of restaurants available.
While Ironwood residents are within walking distance of a variety of amenities, most people still prefer to drive. Three bridges within the city connect to surrounding towns, including Vancouver, New Westminster, and Surrey. Highway 99 and Highway 91 freeways connect with Interstate 5 and surrounding towns, and Richmond Centre offers the Canada Line and SkyTrain rapid transit options to downtown Vancouver. Throughout the city of Richmond, TransLink buses provide transportation to a huge number of stops. It's also not uncommon to see Ironwood residents biking to their destinations. On Sea Island is the Vancouver International Airport, providing most of the region's air access.
The city of Richmond offers up a plethora of public elementary and secondary schools, conveniently located in every neighbourhood. The Shellmont area is served by 3 elementary schools, the Richmond Christian School, and the Matthew McNair Secondary School.
One of the things every resident of Ironwood should see is the variety of public art works available throughout Richmond, such as the Water Sky Garden located at the Olympic Oval. Dotted here and there in Richmond are over 65 public art works created by more than 80 artists. Those who want to check them out can get maps of 10 minute art tours throughout the city at the Richmond Cultural Centre. It's also worth it to visit the Richmond Art Gallery often, as their lineup of artists and works changes frequently. Contemporary artists that are well-known locally and nationally are featured, as well as a variety of historical information and artifacts. The Rufus Lin Gallery showcases a stunning display of gorgeous Japanese fine art. For individuals interested in performing arts, the Gateway Theatre is a must.
Ironwood and Shellmont are home to several neighbourhood parks that residents can access easily. Fantasy Gardens located at Steveston Highway and Highway 99 is a wonderful place to reconnect with nature, while a bike path along Williams Road allows residents to stay active. The Riverport Entertainment Park is an excellent location for those who want a variety of fun activities to take advantage of, and includes a skate park, an IMAX Theater, a pool, bowling alley and more. With the 2010 Winter Olympics taking place in Vancouver, the City of Richmond built an 8,000-seat speed skating oval which now serves as an excellent recreation center.
The city is currently just diving into an extensive plan to increase benefits for residents all over Richmond, including Ironwood. The plan includes a huge number of goals centred on the sustainability of the city, easy access to amenities, improved traffic, and more.
