In the west-central area of the coastal city of Richmond is Granville, a neighborhood boasting a wide range of home styles and sizes that appeal to everyone. Between Granville and Blundell, residents enjoy luxurious homes with large lots while smaller single-family homes are nestled in the areas a little further north. Nearly 5,000 hectares within the city are preserved as farmland by the Agricultural Land Reserve, most of which are part of the eastern area of Richmond. The dominant crops within Richmond are cranberries and blueberries, although farmers in the area also grow strawberries, corn, and potatoes. The unemployment rate in Richmond is 5.7%, which is fairly close to the province's rate of 6.0%. The percentage of residents participating in the workforce is 63.1%, also quite close to the province's 65.6%. While a great deal of Richmond residents work within the community in some aspect, many professionals live in Richmond and commute to other cities for work.
Residents of Granville have a lot of options for shopping without traveling far. Taking Westminster Highway just past the Richmond Hospital, folks will arrive at the Richmond Centre, where a plethora of shopping and service professional options await. Trendy clothing and shoe stores, home furnishings, gifts, electronics and makeup and perfumes are just a few of the retail offerings here. The Lansdowne Centre is another nearby shopping mall, offering similar shops and services. Residents can also enjoy strip malls located along Alexandra Road, which feature a slew of fantastic restaurants, earning this road the nickname "Food Street." Many residents are within walking distance of Blenz Coffee, Freshslice Pizza (offering low-calorie, delicious pizzas), The Heirloom Juice Company and Heirloom Vegetarian.
The Granville neighborhood, like most other neighborhoods in Richmond, are laid out in grid-format, making it very easy to find destinations and reach main thoroughfares. Westminster Highway, which runs along the neighborhood, provides easy access to Highway 99. Residents can reach metro Vancouver via the Arthur Laing Bridge, Oak Street Bridge and Knight Street Bridge, and it's just a 20-minute drive to the Tsawwassen BC Ferry Terminal. The Canada Line is also easily accessed from Granville, which offers rapid transit to Vancouver. With 16 stations, Canada Line provides an excellent travel alternative, and connects with the existing rapid transit lines at the Waterfront Station.
Many parents in Granville enjoy walking their children to and from school each day. The schools serving the area are Donald E. McKay Elementary School on Lombard Road and the Burnett Secondary School on Granville Avenue. Here, children can enjoy the large playground and fields during and after school. The Garratt Neighbourhood Park is available in the neighborhood as well, on the site that used to be the B.W. Garratt Elementary School; residents often bring their pets to this area for fresh air and exercise.
In addition to the 38 elementary and 10 secondary public schools located throughout Richmond, there are 3 Montessori schools, and 8 French immersion schools. Those seeking higher learning can take advantage of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Sprott Shaw College and the British Columbia Institute of Technology Aerospace Technology courses near the airport.
The Richmond Art Gallery is a must-see for visitors and residents alike. Here, regional, national and international contemporary artists are featured for all to enjoy. The Gateway Theatre is another popular location for residents, as they can check out some amazing performances or let their 6-18 year-old children take a performing arts course. Some of the most amazing art in Richmond can be seen absolutely free; there are more than 65 public pieces of art that have been created by over 80 artists. The Water Sky Garden at the Olympic Oval is one such example, created for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games. The Richmond Cultural Centre offers maps with 10 Minute Art Tours charted on them.
A variety of festivals are held in Richmond, including the Richmond Maritime Festival which takes place every August at the Britannia Shipyard. At this beautiful National Historic Site, families celebrate the maritime history and heritage listening to live music, watching exciting demonstrations and checking out exhibitions. In the summer, Richmond residents enjoy the Richmond Night Market each weekend, where a huge variety of items is sold and live entertainment is offered.
Sports lovers appreciate the Richmond Sockeyes, a Junior B hockey team, as well as the Richmond Budgies Senior Men's Baseball Club. The UBC Thunderbirds varsity rowing program calls the CAD John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse home, which is located at the middle arm of Richmond's Fraser River.
